Stress can be defined as something that makes you worry - stress is when you worry about not achieving good grades in your exams or school work, or worry about your mother when the doctor says that she needs an operation.
In fact to your body, stress is anything that is a change to your usual routine - even imagined change can be seen as stress - this is what we call "worrying".
Did you know...
The mind body connection means that relaxing one will have an affect on the other. Relax your body! Imagine when you last felt really relaxed...
Stress can be broken down into a few categories:
Emotional Stress:
When arguments and disagreements cause change in your personal life
Illness:
Catching a cold or breaking and arm - these are changes to your body condition
Pushing your body too hard:
Stress is overdriving yourself - like working (or partying!) 16 hours a day (as you reduce the time available for rest). This energy drain will cause your body to fall behind on its repair work - so you may find you "run out of energy" if you continue the same routine.
Major stress can occur if you are using a lot of energy and not giving yourself time to recover to remain healthy.
Hormonal factors:
Puberty causes changes in the hormonal make-up of the body. The body grows and changes in different ways. This can be very stressful.
Pre-menstrual syndrome:
Once a woman passes puberty her body is designed to work best in the presence of female hormones. Once a month, before a period, a woman's hormone levels drop sharply, this can cause a temporary stress on the body that can affect behaviour and mood. This is commonly known as pre menstrual tension (PMT).
TOP TIPS
1. Stress is a mind and body experience. If you consciously relax your body you will find your mind will also relax.
2. If you feel stressed don't take on anything else which may cause you stress. If you have no choice, exchange it for one which you already have - to keep your stress levels at the same rate rather than building up.
