The loosest definition of drugs would be "any substance taken into the body which alters the state of consciousness of the user"
There are many types of drugs some legal and some illegal - all have the ability to alter the consciousness of the user. Some drugs are powerful enough to alter the user's perception of time, space and self. All substances which are misused have the ability to cause long term harm to the user, both physically and mentally.
For example, drugs can be addictive - you can crave for more, they can cause the body to become tolerant of them - (you need to take more to have the same effect) - and they can cause physical damage to the body (smoking can cause lung disease, injecting drugs can cause infection and collapse of veins and snorting powders can cause damage to nose membrane)
As they can alter the users perception of reality they can become an unhealthy way of coping with things in life the user might not want to face.
Stimulants - amphetamines, cocaine, tobacco
Increase in heartbeat/breathing/blood pressure and thought patterns. These drugs literally stimulate the body and cause an increase in energy (only over the short term). These drugs can cause users to have mood swings (what goes up...)
Depressants - alcohol, heroin, cannabis resin (hash) and solvents (glue, gas, cans)
Decrease on heartbeat, breathing, blood pressure and thought patterns. These drugs literally slow the user down and can therefore depress thoughts that the user doesn't want to face.
Hallucinogens, - LSD, cannabis, herbal (grass, skunk)
These drugs change the sensory information that comes into the body. We all have five senses - touch, taste, smell, sight and sound - these drugs can make those senses distorted and cause a person to be unable to make sense of the world as it is. These drugs can cause the biggest changes in a user's perception of time,
space and self.
Ecstasy
Combines the hallucinogen effect with stimulant effect and can change the mood/feelings of the user. It is also known that it can cause depression after use.
Did you know...
Drugs affect your sleep patterns and shorten the amount of dream sleep. Dream sleep is a form of deep sleep most healing to the body.
TOP TIPS
1. Always read information about any substance that you are planning to use. Forewarned is forearmed.
2. To rely on a drug for pleasure means that eventually you will not be able to feel pleasure unless that drug is being used. This is when it becomes a habit.
